Profitable trainer statistics
The main type of trainer statistics that most bettors will be used to are trainers overall strike rates at a certain course, trainer/jockey combinations and current trainer form. These type of statistics are useful to get an overall view of how a trainer is doing but the main problem with them all bettors have access to such stats (so they are factored into the betting market and it is difficult to make a profit from using them). In order to really profit from trainer statistics, we need to look deeper into how trainers operate. By digging deeper, we are distinquishing ourselves from the 95% of losing bettors. They pay for the bookmakers & our profits. When looking deeper into how trainers operate, It's generally easier to look at either one trainer in isolation or one course in isolation.
In the examples below, we will look at the Southwell all weather track. Here are some examples of stats that can be looked into: • Trainers whose horse won last time out Certain trainers will have their horses well handicapped & the horse will be able to follow up with another win next time out. Other trainers have horses that will rarely win two races in a row. Such last time out winners can be great value lay bets. • Trainers whose horse came 2nd last time out These stats are worth knowing for similar reasons as above. Such horses are potentially available at bigger prices than those that won last time out but can win just as often. • Trainers records with Favourites Some trainers have >50% strike rates with their handicap favourites. Others have favourites that rarely win. Both types can be put to profitable use. • Horses beaten by <1 length last time out For the same reasons that we want to follow horses that came 2nd LTO. • Trainers whose horse last ran <8 days ago Some trainers know when there horse is fit and ready to strike, others would do better keeping their horses at home. • Horses that have changed trainer since the last run Certain trainers can radically improve a horse (and some big priced winners can be had), others have poor strike rates with new recruits. • Handicappers that ran in a maiden Last time out Such horses have never won before so are potentially well handicapped. It is not just Sir Mark Prescott who knows this trick. • Horses whose last run was on the flat (turf) It is well documented that such horses are generally poor bets but certain trainers can ready their horses to adapt to the All-weather straight away. (these stats are particularly important during the end of the flat season/start of the All-weather season
